Dizziness is a condition which affects everyone at one time or another, but if you are older, may affect you more often, and for seemingly no reason. There is a reason, though, most often associated with imbalances, disturbances, injury, or disease of the inner ear.

To understand dizziness, and why it exists, you have to understand how the inner ear works.

The parts of the inner ear which are responsible for keeping balance are the vestibular or semicircular canals. Both of these are connected to nerves which transmit signals to the brain to let it know what is going on with your surroundings.

Not only is dizziness in itself such a hard condition to deal with, with the falling, stumbling, blurry vision, and headaches, but the conditions associated with dizziness, such as forgetfulness and disorganization can also be very difficult to cope with.

Diseases which commonly cause malfunctions in the inner ear, thus affecting balance, include Bilateral Vestibular Hypofunction, Meniere’s disease, brain conditions, and various viruses.

Bilateral Vestibular Hypofunction, or BVH, can be caused by Trauma to the inner ear infection such as meningitis, antibiotic toxicity, or trauma to the inner ear. Up to one third of BVH cases, however, have no known cause, even after extensive testing is done.

Doctors can treat infections, antibiotic toxicity, and trauma, but for those cases which have no known cause, it is often a guessing game to decide which treatment might alleviate dizziness symptoms best, but the dizziness will always return in the end. One course of action prescribed by doctors is Gaze Stabilization Therapy (GST), which involves exercises that purposefully make your body dizzy. Why would you want to induce the very thing you are trying to get rid of? Doctors’ theorize that by intentionally making yourself dizzy, the body will learn to compensate for the dizziness, and eventually the dizziness will go away.

For natural treatment options for dizziness caused by BVH:

  • A back massage with lavender is also a great home remedy for dizziness.
  • There are also several solutions you can make at home to drink, including black pepper dissolved in water with lemon juice and salt.
  • Other solutions include drinking pure ginger juice (in small amounts) to relieve pressure; honey and apple cider vinegar can clear dizziness quickly; chamomile tea and peppermint tea also help to rid dizziness symptoms quickly.

When dealing with a dizziness episode, you should cover both ears and remain as still as possible. Also, you can try focusing on one stationary object to transmit signals to the brain giving it information to help it balance yourself.

Remember to stay hydrated. Dehydration is a major cause of dizziness, and is found in the majority of the population. Drinking the recommended 8-10 glasses of water a day will significantly ease dizziness in day to day tasks.
